What It Smells Like

Martyr opens with a striking combination of black pepper, sharp metallic notes and the dry, splintered impression of freshly broken wood. The pepper brings a prickly, spicy edge, while the metallic nail accord creates a cold, industrial quality that contrasts with the more natural woody elements. There is little sweetness to soften the opening. Instead, it feels raw and uncompromising, evoking metal heated near a fire and the scent of wood beginning to char. The overall effect is deliberately rugged rather than traditionally polished or conventionally fresh.

As the fragrance develops, smoke becomes the dominant feature. The charred wood accord, inspired by yakisugi, a Japanese technique for preserving wood by charring its surface, gives the composition a dark, burnt character. Pine needles introduce a green, resinous quality beneath the smoke, while black leather adds a dense, dry and slightly abrasive facet. The contrast between the cool metallic opening and the warmth of burning timber creates an atmospheric impression, like walking through a dark forest where a bonfire has been burning for hours.
