The Story Behind
Filippo Sorcinelli
Filippo Sorcinelli is an Italian artistic fragrance house where perfumery meets music, art, spirituality, design, and storytelling. Founded by artist and musician Filippo Sorcinelli, the house approaches perfume as an extension of a wider creative practice, transforming personal experiences, places, memories, and artistic influences into deeply atmospheric scent compositions.
Filippo Sorcinelli's creative world began long before perfumery. In 2001, he founded LAVS, an atelier dedicated to the study, design, and creation of sacred vestments and liturgical objects. His work has included creating vestments for Pope Benedict XVI and for Pope Francis's inaugural Mass in 2013, establishing a strong connection between his artistic practice, craftsmanship, and sacred traditions.
Music is another fundamental part of Sorcinelli's creative identity. An accomplished organist, he describes the organ as a lifelong source of inspiration, and its influence can be felt throughout his fragrance work. His Extrait de Musique collection directly translates experiences of organ music, sacred spaces, and sound into olfactory compositions, with fragrances inspired by organ stops and the atmosphere of historic churches.
The first Filippo Sorcinelli fragrance was created in 2014 as a tribute to the LAVS atelier. This became the beginning of the UNUM collection, described by the house as a form of “olfactory tailoring” open to artistic influences. The collection explores spirituality, emotion, memory, freedom, fear, sacred spaces, and the human experience through highly individual compositions.
Many of Sorcinelli's fragrances are inspired by specific places, artworks, musical experiences, and moments in time. Reliqvia, for example, was inspired by the Church of the Cross in Senigallia, a historic Baroque building associated with important relics and with which Sorcinelli has a personal connection as organist and artistic director. Opus 1144 explores Gothic architecture through the scent of the period surrounding the construction of the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
The result is a collection of perfumes that often feel more like atmospheric artworks than conventional fragrances. Incense, woods, smoke, florals, resins, musks, and other materials are used to construct evocative environments, from shadowed churches and Gothic architecture to music, photography, mist, memory, and deeply personal emotional experiences.
Filippo Sorcinelli describes his wider creative philosophy as a contamination between the arts. Alongside perfume, his work encompasses art, events, fashion, design, and other creative disciplines, all connected by an ongoing pursuit of beauty and unusual forms of expression.
