What It Smells Like
Reliqvia opens in deep, resinous territory, with incense and patchouli establishing an immediate sense of aged wood, smoke and ritual. The incense is not bright or clean. It has a darker, earthy character, giving the fragrance an almost architectural quality from the beginning. Independent fragrance descriptions likewise identify the opening as smoky, earthy incense backed by patchouli.
As it develops, the composition becomes more complex and atmospheric. Orange blossom, Scots pine and lentisk introduce a green, resinous freshness around the dense incense, while cloves and amyris add warmth. Guaiac, cashmere and sandalwood deepen the woody character, creating the impression of dark timber and incense-filled interiors rather than a conventional woody perfume.
In the dry down, smoke, elemi, nutmeg and tobacco leaves become increasingly important. The tobacco adds a dry, aged quality, while smoke reinforces the impression of incense that has accumulated over time. Sweet orange and black currant provide small flashes of fruit and brightness beneath the darker materials, preventing the composition from becoming completely austere.
Overall, the fragrance feels dark, solemn and deeply atmospheric, like stepping into an old Italian church filled with incense, carved wood and the lingering traces of centuries-old ritual. Reliqvia was inspired by the Church of the Cross in Senigallia, a Baroque oratory dating to 1608 that houses important relics associated with the Passion of Christ. Sorcinelli describes the fragrance as a meditation on memory, passing time and what remains.
