What It Smells Like
Camel opens with a dry, spicy rush of dried fruits, dates and incense. The fruit is not especially syrupy or gourmand. Instead, reviews often describe the dates and dried fruits as dusty, woody and lightly sweet, surrounded by frankincense and aromatic spice. The opening can also be distinctly animalic on some skin, with the civet creating a musky, warm and slightly feral impression.
As it develops, the incense and resins become more prominent. Myrrh, frankincense, cinnamon and amber create a warm, dry and dusty atmosphere, while cedar adds a woody sharpness. Rose, jasmine and orange blossom provide softer floral facets beneath the spices and resins. The overall effect has frequently been compared to travelling through an incense-filled Middle Eastern market or along an ancient spice route.
On the dry down, sandalwood, tonka, vanilla, vetiver, musk, oud and civet create a deeper and smoother base. The sweetness becomes more noticeable, although it remains restrained rather than turning into a conventional gourmand. For some wearers the animalic character remains prominent, while for others it fades into a warm, musky background and leaves behind incense, woods, dried fruit and soft amber.
Overall, the fragrance feels dry, spicy, resinous and richly atmospheric, balancing dried fruit and incense with warm woods and an unmistakably animalic edge.
