What It Smells Like

My Past Selves' Flowers opens with an unusual combination of tropical fruit, green tea and botanical notes. Mangosteen and snake fruit lend a tangy, exotic fruitiness, while genmaicha tea brings a distinctive toasted, green quality. Ginseng adds an earthy root-like facet, and the grape seed and flowering tobacco accords contribute to the fragrance's unusual, slightly bitter character. Rather than smelling like a bright, uncomplicated fruity floral, the opening feels layered and somewhat strange, with fresh, juicy elements already tinged by something darker and more subdued.

As the fragrance develops, the fruit and green tea give way to a more complex floral heart. Peony, azalea and orchid introduce a varied floral character, while opium lends a darker, more atmospheric impression. Hojicha tea adds a roasted, slightly smoky quality, and the earthy soil accord moves the composition away from the impression of a fresh bouquet. The flowers can feel lush and alive at first, but they gradually acquire a drier, mustier character, as though a once-vibrant arrangement has been left in a quiet room for too long. Some reviewers experience this as the smell of wilting or decaying flowers, while others find it more like a preserved bouquet, dusty and nostalgic rather than overtly rotten.

In the dry-down, the fragrance becomes darker, smokier and more resinous. Natural oud introduces woody depth, while incense and nag champa create an evocative, temple-like atmosphere. Dragon's blood resin adds a rich, balsamic quality, and laka wood, halmaddi resin and hydrocarbon resin deepen the composition with warm, earthy and slightly smoky facets. The remaining floral notes become more muted against this resinous background, creating the impression of dried petals, old incense and flowers preserved as a memory. The transition can feel less like a conventional perfume development and more like the gradual transformation of a bouquet from freshness to stillness and decay.

Overall, the fragrance feels like a bouquet of tropical and green flowers left to fade in a forgotten room, eventually becoming a haunting mixture of dusty petals, dark tea, soil, oud and lingering incense.
