What It Smells Like

Empty Wishes Well opens with a striking metallic impression, reminiscent of a rusty coin held between cold fingers. There is a sharp, mineral quality that evokes old iron, weathered stone and the faint tang of metal exposed to the elements. This opening is deliberately unusual, with little of the sweetness or conventional freshness associated with mainstream fragrances. The metallic accord is relatively prominent at first, but it gradually gives way to greener, wetter and more earthy facets as the fragrance develops.

As the fragrance settles, the smell of rain-soaked surroundings becomes more apparent. Petrichor evokes the scent of rain meeting dry ground, while fallen leaves and stone create an impression of an old wishing well surrounded by damp pathways and neglected vegetation. Sage adds a green, aromatic edge, and myrrh brings a subtle resinous quality beneath the mineral freshness. The result is less like a bright, fresh forest fragrance and more like a secluded place after rainfall, where wet stone, rusting metal and decaying leaves mingle in the cool air. Some reviewers experience the composition as clean and atmospheric, while others find it darker, muddier or more intensely metallic.

In the dry-down, earthy notes, patchouli and two varieties of vetiver deepen the fragrance. Haitian vetiver contributes a dry, rooty earthiness, while Java vetiver adds another dimension to the woody, green character. Galbanum lends a bitter, resinous greenness, amyris provides a soft woody facet, and carrot seed contributes a subtle root-like quality. The metallic opening becomes less dominant, allowing the earthy and vegetal elements to create a more settled impression. Depending on skin chemistry, the result may feel like wet soil and mossy stone, or lean towards drier, greener patchouli and vetiver.

Overall, the fragrance feels like discovering a forgotten rusty coin beside an abandoned stone well on a rainy autumn day, surrounded by wet leaves, mineral-rich earth and the quiet scent of green vegetation.
