The Story Behind

Solivagant

Solivagant is an independent Indonesian artisan perfume house founded by perfumer and fragrance developer Dekito in Bogor, West Java. The name comes from a word describing someone who wanders alone, an idea that fits the house's central theme of solitude, personal journeys and memories translated into scent.

For Dekito, fragrance is fundamentally a way of preserving memory. Solivagant was created as a space where his own experiences, journeys and emotions could become perfumes, with each fragrance representing a particular story rather than simply being an exercise in constructing an appealing formula.

The house describes its approach as "scent as an object of memory", and its philosophy places feeling above formula. Solivagant does not position itself around following fragrance trends or conventional market tastes. Instead, each perfume is intended to create an atmosphere, assembled from raw materials, intuition, obsession and personal experience.

That philosophy can be seen particularly clearly in Pantura. The fragrance was inspired by Dekito's journeys along Indonesia's northern coastal road when travelling home. The changing landscape, warm air, roadside stops and emotional sense of returning home became the basis for the composition. Rather than simply representing "the sea" as an abstract fragrance theme, Pantura turns a specific journey into an olfactory memory.

This relationship between place and fragrance continues throughout the collection. Jata Bhumi, for example, is inspired by the Nadran sea ceremony in Indramayu, where offerings are released into the ocean. Its composition combines marine and aquatic notes with smoke, leather, animalic facets and geosmin, creating an impression of salt air, incense smoke, the sea and wet earth.

Other Solivagant fragrances explore very different memories and ideas. Animal Farm combines leather, mud and animalic notes, while Bloody Luwak brings together coffee, jasmine and civet. Wayback uses a blood accord, cherry and oud, and Patchouli So Sexy combines patchouli with white chocolate and amber. Ayang-Ayang moves in a more floral direction with jasmine, tuberose and musk.

This diversity is intentional. Solivagant's catalogue is not built around one narrowly defined fragrance style. It moves between animalic, marine, woody, floral, gourmand, earthy and darker compositions, with the connecting thread being the story behind each scent.

The house also has a distinctly Indonesian perspective. Rather than treating Indonesia simply as a source of exotic ingredients, Solivagant draws on the country's landscapes, journeys, cultural traditions and personal memories. The result is a form of indie perfumery that can feel highly specific to place while remaining personal rather than documentary.

Dekito's route into perfumery was unconventional. He originally worked in IT and became seriously interested in fragrance during the pandemic, beginning with an interest that developed into studying raw materials, formulas and perfumery technique. Solivagant eventually emerged as his own perfume house, while he later co-founded Ecofragrantica, a fragrance development studio where he works on perfumes and materials for other brands.

The craft itself remains central to Solivagant. Dekito describes beginning each day by smelling raw materials as a form of olfactory training before working on formulas and fragrance development. He views perfumery as a continual process of learning, with each material having its own character and every new formula providing another opportunity to understand scent.

Solivagant has also developed a more ambitious narrative project around the Javanese poetic tradition of Tembang Macapat. Its extended series is based on the eleven poetic metres traditionally associated with stages of human life, beginning with Maskumambang. The project turns the progression of a life into a sequence of perfumes, giving the house an unusually structured way of exploring memory, identity and mortality.

Even the way Solivagant presents its fragrances reflects its independent character. Rather than relying solely on conventional fragrance families, the house uses moods such as calm and minimal, warm and nostalgic, dark and moody, soft and romantic, and fresh. This puts the emotional experience of wearing a fragrance ahead of a traditional top, heart and base-note classification.

The name Solivagant ultimately captures the house's philosophy well. These are perfumes concerned with wandering, observation and remembering. A road home, a coastal ceremony, an animalic encounter, a particular landscape or a stage of life can become the starting point for a fragrance.

For fragrance lovers interested in genuinely independent perfumery, Solivagant offers something quite different from the polished international niche market. Its fragrances are personal, atmospheric and often unconventional, with Indonesian landscapes, memories and cultural references providing a distinctive foundation.
